Consistent user experience across the Miele product world
From washing and cooking to baking and cooling, Miele is considered a premium brand for household appliances. As a pioneer and industry leader, Miele envisioned a connected smart home early on and launched its first mobile app in 2014. In 2019, in response to higher demands on usability and functionality as well as emerging new technologies, the decision was made to relaunch the app. Miele selected slashwhy as its development partner. The goal: to seamlessly extend the positive customer experience from Miele’s physical product world into the mobile app.
Modularity & cross-
functional feature teams
Initially, slashwhy joined the project with one, and later with multiple cross-functional Scrum teams comprising Scrum Masters, developers, and UX/UI designers, integrating into the complex agile project structure. Thanks to the modular architecture co-designed by slashwhy during the discovery phase, various teams were able to work in parallel and independently on different app features using a scaled agile approach. In particular, slashwhy was primarily involved in developing features for cooking appliances, coffee machines, recipes, remote updates, connectivity, and pairing.
Pairing assistant simplifies device connectivity
Given the diverse technical conditions in end users’ homes, pairing devices poses particular challenges for smart home solution providers. The complexity in the Miele App was further increased by the extensive Miele product range and the requirement to connect multiple generations of devices. The pairing assistant implemented by slashwhy guides users step-by-step through the connection process, ensuring an intuitive setup of household appliances.
Intelligent appliance control & recipe inspiration
slashwhy integrated a variety of household and cooking appliances into the Miele App, enabling smart control of interconnected devices. This includes features like “FoodView,” which allows monitoring dishes in the oven, as well as intelligent food recognition and automated optimization of cooking results. Additionally, the recipes feature provides a wide range of culinary inspiration and even triggers direct device actions during certain recipe steps – for instance, the app can automatically preheat the oven.
With the Miele App, Miele succeeded in developing a digital communication channel perfectly aligned with the physical Miele product world, creating a seamless and inspiring customer experience.
Since its relaunch, the Miele App has become the most important touchpoint in the customer journey.
More than one million Miele household appliances are connected to the app (as of 2023).
In 2023, Miele was recognized by the tech magazine Chip as the best smart home provider in the household appliances category.
Thanks to the new operating concept and technical optimizations, App Store ratings have improved by 2 stars since the relaunch.
